Washington Must Take Action To Secure Domestic Rare Earth Magnet Production in 2024

In the rapidly evolving global trade and geopolitical landscapes, expanding rare earth magnet production and securing a reliable and independent supply chain are crucial. Given our nation's growing reliance on clean energy, the importance of rare earth magnets — and the rare earth elements used to produce them — cannot be overstated.

Circularity, Explained

A circular economy is an economic system designed to minimize waste, make the most of resources, and promote sustainability. In circular economies, the traditional linear model of "take, make, dispose" is replaced with a closed-loop system where products, materials, and resources are reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and recycled.

The Importance of Building a Domestic Rare Earth Supply Chain

Over the past several decades, China has determinedly built its rare earth element (REE) mining and processing industrial base. Notably, between 1978 and 1995, China’s annual REE production increased by an average of 40 percent. During this rapid ramp-up period, China was able to effectively monopolize the global supply chain for REEs and REE applications by subsidizing the industry to discourage competition, by leveraging a lack of environmental and labor laws, and by restricting foreign investment in the sector.

How Recycled EV Traction Drive Motors Can Help Unlock an Electric Future

Year over year, we’ve seen a rapid rise in demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Last year, EV sales in the United States increased by 65%, surpassing more than 800,000 annual EV sales for the first time in history. Moreover, in 2021 U.S. HEV sales jumped 76% to 801,550 vehicles, accounting for 5% of U.S. light vehicle sales that year. As Americans continue to seek out new ways to lower their carbon footprint and EVs and HEVs become more cost competitive and sustainable in the long-term, demand will only continue to rise.

Rare Earth NdFeB Magnets Explained

Rare earth neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets will play a critical role in building our renewable energy future, but what exactly are they? In short, rare earth NdFeB magnets are permanent rare earth magnets made from an alloy of neodymium, iron, and boron. They are currently the most widely-used type of rare earth magnet on the market and the most powerful commercially available permanent magnet.

Closing the Loop: Electrifying the Future Through a Dependable, Decentralized Supply Chain

As the global transition to renewable energy surges forward, it is becoming even more apparent that the current rare earth element supply chain puts the United States in a precarious position: rare earth elements are critical to building a strong clean energy infrastructure, but mining those elements can create serious environmental harm.

U.S. Policymakers Must Build on Recent NdFeB Magnet Policy Announcement to Further Strengthen Domestic Rare Earth Supply Chain

Neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets are high-performance magnets made of rare earth elements (REEs), and they serve as key building blocks for virtually all technologies that rely on an electric motor. They power critical national security systems, such as fighter aircraft and missile guidance systems, as well as clean energy technologies such as electric vehicles, hydroelectric power stations, and wind turbines. The magnets are also used in other essential electric technologies such as computer hard drives, MRI devices, refrigeration systems, and audio equipment.

New Climate Bill to Supercharge Electrification, Demand for Rare Earth Magnets

On August 16th, President Joe Biden made history by signing into law the Inflation Reduction Act — the largest clean energy investment ever made by the United States or any other country in the world. By pumping $369 billion into renewable energy, domestic manufacturing, and electric vehicle tax breaks, the U.S. has shown it is capable and willing to shift to a more sustainable and independent clean energy economy.

EcoFlux: Securing A Sustainable Electric Future

The emergence of affordable alternatives to fossil fuel-burning energy sources is one of the most important technological developments of the past century. But as we look to move away from fossil fuels in favor of lower-carbon technologies, a new problem has emerged: the shift to electrification is skyrocketing demand for environmentally harmful raw materials, including the kind of rare earth elements (REEs) used in magnet-powered applications.
